Cubs

Who are we?

Cubs form the second section of the Worldwide family of Scouting. We are also part of Deben District  covering a wider local area  and share activities. We are formed into a ‘Pack’, divided into ‘Sixes’ and have three leaders, Akela, Baloo & Bagheera and an Explorer Young Leader.  We are named after Rudyard Kipling’s characters in ‘Jungle Book’.

 What do we do?

We follow a national, structured programme covering 6 ‘zones’ linked to our Cub Scout Promise. They are:

•     Belief

•     Community

•     Fitness

•     Creativity

•     Global

•     Outdoor & adventure

An evening would start with ‘Grand Howl’ followed by a game, some activity badge work and scouting skills and maybe another game and closing ceremony.

 How we achieve this

After a trial few weeks, Cubs will be invested, by mutual agreement between leader and parents. They will need to have a Cub Scout Top, a tee shirt underneath & navy blue activity trousers. (These can be purchased from Craftability……) We all wear a group scarf  which will be presented with their ‘Six’ coloured woggle (holds their scarf together smartly!) and group name & district badges. Each Cub has a ‘PowerPack’ Handbook, presented to them on their investiture. It has lots of information and badge stickers to record their progress. Parents are welcome to come and see their Cub invested.

Cubs like to earn badges! Badges can be achieved with a little work either as an individual, following an interest they may have, such as musician or together as a pack. The highest badge a Cub can earn is the Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

We meet each Tuesday evening during term-time. Sometimes we have extra activities such as archery, camps, visits, competitions etc which can be on another evening or at weekends. We inform parents via e-mail (preferred choice), letter or phone. We encourage parents’ support by asking on occasion, for extra help with an activity, collecting or donating items and encouraging your child’s interest with badges. We ask that you support the Group’s monthly Church Parade at St Mary’s Westerfield on the second Sunday of the month and the annual District St George’s Day Parade in April.
